25 Unicorn Street, Saturday Morning

Waking up in a warm, comfortable bed was still kind of an amazing thing to Clint, so he wasn't in a rush to dig himself out of the covers right away when he woke up. He knew Lucky would need a walk at some point, and that would mean real clothes instead of pajamas and going outside, and he wanted to put that off for as long as possible, so he burrowed even deeper into the comforter and--ended up accidentally bumping into someone else. Had he had a sleepover last night?

Clint giggled and sat down on the couch with the box, digging out a handful of cereal and shoving it in his mouth. "This was a good idea," he mumbled.

"Yep," she said around a mouthful of Froot Loops. "You don't want milk?"

Clint shrugged. "I can have some later. I don't want to mess up too many dishes." And it was harder to yank the box away than a bowl but Clint wasn't going to say that. "This remote's got like a billion buttons," he said, poking at them until the TV came on.

"D'you need help?" she asked. Like she'd have any idea what the buttons were for.

[so_hawkward]

"Nooo, I got it," Clint said quickly. He hit a button and made the sound go up really loud, but only for a little while before the sound went back down, and he changed the channel instead, thankfully landing on cartoons. "See!"

"Yay!" Kitty said happily. "We have breakfast and a puppy and cartoons. Today is awesome."

"It's totally the best," Clint said, happily setting the evil remote aside. "Who do you watch cartoons with at home?"

Hey, if he was going to have a girl here, he was at least going to find out if she was as cool as she seemed.

"No one," Kitty said with a frown. "I'm an only child. Sometimes my mom watches with me but I don't think she likes 'em. Who do you watch with?"

"Sometimes my brother watches with me. I'm sorry you don't have any brothers or sisters," Clint said, popping another handful of cereal into his mouth. "You should ask your mom for some."

"I tried putting it on my Christmas list one time," Kitty said thoughtfully, "but my mom said Santa doesn't bring those. And also that we're Jewish."

Santa was sort of a discriminatory jerk that way.

"Santa's kind of a jerk. He never brings me anything good."

Because that was the least painful explanation for things.

"You're not so bad for a girl, you know," Clint said with a smile. That was a high compliment right there, Kitty.

Kitty sat up a little straighter, looking kind of proud. "Thanks. You're not so bad for a boy, either. You cook good cereal."

Clint thought about it for a second before asking, "Do you want more?" and offering her the box. It didn't seem right to hoard the food he'd found, even if he didn't know how much more there was.

"No, thanks, I've still got a bunch. You sure you don't want milk?" Because that would go anywhere good.

[so_hawkward]

"Nah, I'll have some later," Clint promised. "I've got to drink a lot so I get taller."

"Huh," Kitty said, and looked thoughtfully at her bowl. Then she carefully lifted it up to start drinking the milk straight from it.

She was still going to wind up at average height.

Clint giggled and watched as Lucky finally came over to investigate them. "Look out, Lucky's coming," he said, taking a handful of cereal and holding it out as a puppy offering.

"Do puppies eat cereal?" she wondered, wiping some milk off her chin with her hand.

[so_hawkward]

"I don't know. I think they eat anything," Clint said.

Lucky sniffed at his hand and chomped some of the Fruit Loops out because yes, he would eat pretty much anything. Clint was still going to owe him a lot of pizza though.

"I guess being the best dog ever means he can definitely eat it," Kitty said, thinking about it. "Since it's 'fficial."

Lucky gave Clint's hand one last lick and then went over to Kitty, giving her actual, legitimate puppy eyes. Someone wanted more petting, thank you.

"Oh, no fair using those on me!" Kitty laughed, holding her bowl carefully with one hand so she could pet Lucky with the other. "I think puppy dog eyes are his superpower."

"I bet. That's so unfair," Clint said, laughing. "Do you think he's a superdog?"

"Yes. Yes, I do," Kitty decided. "Super Lucky, protector of dogs everywhere!"

Okay, Clint only owed Lucky one pizza now. Lucky picked his head up and barked happily, and Clint laughed harder. "Aww, I think he agrees. Now I know we're both safe."
